The invention relates to a railway vehicle axle distance overlength detection system and method, and the system comprises a pedal, a speed measurement radar and a host, the pedal and the speed measurement radar are connected with the host through cables, the pedal is used for detecting whether a vehicle wheel passes through, and outputting a signal to the host when the vehicle wheel passes through. The speed measuring radar is used for measuring the running speed and the running direction of a vehicle and transmitting the measured information to the host, and the host is used for receiving theinformation sent by the pedal and the speed measuring radar, calculating to obtain the axle distance of the railway vehicle and comparing the axle distance of the railway vehicle with the minimum length of a track circuit, and sending an alarm signal according to the comparison result. According to the method, the vehicle with the axle distance exceeding the minimum length of the track circuit can be quickly and accurately recognized, an alarm is given immediately, the current situation that safety is manually guaranteed is changed, safety is guaranteed through equipment, and operation safetyis further improved.
