The invention discloses a protection device and method for children taking an elevator. The protection device comprises a determining mechanism and a protection mechanism. The determining mechanism is arranged on a car to be used for determining whether persons entering the car are children. The protection mechanism is electrically connected with the determining mechanism and a car control system, and the determining mechanism instructs the protection mechanism to enter a working state when determining that the persons entering the car are children; the protection mechanism can instruct the car control system to ignore an in-car operation instruction and an out-of-car calling instruction when determining that the persons in the car are all children who are not suitable for taking the elevator independently, and an elevator car door is opened after a specified period of time through specific time. By means of the protection device and method, accidents caused by the fact that children take the elevator without accompany of adults are effectively prevented, and life safety of the children is guaranteed.
