The invention relates to torque based energy management in a hybrid vehicle, and discloses a system and method for controlling a power transmission system in a hybrid vehicle having an engine and a traction motor. The method includes commanding the engine to provide an engine torque corresponding with a desired performance characteristic at a current engine speed. The method additionally includes commanding the motor to provide a motor torque to compensate a difference between an operator torque request and the engine torque.
