Report on model and full-scale research on number and spacing of longitudinal bulkheads necessary for large tankers to ensure that deck and bottom shell structure is fully effective under action of longitudinal bending; stress data were recorded by British Ship Research Assn during launch of 2 similar tankers of about 40,000 tons dw, 1 with 2 and other with 3 longitudinal bulkheads; maximum change in stress, hog to sag, was of order of 3 tons/sq in.; bulkheads of both ships are fully effective longitudinal strength members of main hull; profile and midship section diagrams.
