Extraordinary pitting and erosion occured on cooling side of liner of diesel engines used in 50 diesel locomotives of Japanese National Railroads; degree of cavitation corrosion is different depending upon type of engine; rate of increase of depth of extraordinary pitting sometimes reaches more than ten times amount of wear in ID; field test was performed to prevent cavitation by treatment of cooling water; effect of metallic coatings on cooling side of liner, combined with water treatment are reported.
