Many earthmoving vehicles perform two phases of operation such as loading and hauling, or working and traveling; study carried out at Allison Div of General Motors Corp to develop converter which gives optimum performance in each phase of work cycle and can be shifted into desired operation as duty requires; principle of variable-capacity converters and establishment of transmission requirements; selection of converter approach incorporating freewheeling-type variable stator, design of which is described; design innovations incorporated in transmission included stator pressure seals and freewheel spring retention; application to elevator scraper; performance advantages.
