The continuous flow intersection (CFI) mode is one of most important unconventional intersection design (UID) modes. This kind of intersection transfers left-turn movements to secondary intersections to obtain a 2-phase signal control scheme at the main intersection, so the traffic efficiency is greatly improved. Existing research on the optimal timing model for the CFI merely takes motorized traffic into account. This paper establishes a theoretical study on optimal timing of CFI with non-motorized traffic. We first introduce a pedestrian phase design to the signal timing scheme of the CFI and extend the delay and queue model to accommodate non-motorized traffic. The optimization model, constrained by queue length and pedestrian phase, is then built to minimize average per car delay of the CFI and guarantee pedestrians crossing the intersection. Finally, the case study proves that the optimization model can produce an effective timing scheme for the CFI with non-motorized traffic.
