This chapter begins with a brief discussion on alternative technologies to power automobiles. It also talks about increasing the efficiency of current gasoline engines, and reduction in vehicle weight. Next, the chapter deals with several alternative technologies that are being developed and that seem promising. These technologies are broadly divided into three categories: hybrid vehicles; electric vehicle; and fuel cell or hydrogen vehicles. The chapter goes on to provide an introduction to advanced lightweight composites that are either currently used or have promise for future usage in automobiles. A brief discussion of some of the materials that are commonly used as reinforcements is presented. A section on automotive applications talks about the powertrain, pistons, connecting rods, main bearings, engine accessories, electronics, and lead acid battery.
