This chapter presents the airspace congestion metrics that have been developed in order to improve the modeling of the objectives used in optimizing sectorization and traffic assignment. It begins by presenting a macroscopic metric based on traffic flows, and a microscopic geometric approach. The chapter considers a trajectory‐based metric using Lyapunov exponents.
