This chapter presents a realistic theory for the vehicle–bridge interaction (VBI) system considering the vehicle damping, by which both the vehicle and contact responses are obtained. It presents an improved backward calculation procedure for the contact response. The chapter verifies the analytical results by comparison with the finite element simulation using the VBI element. It presents a parametric study for the effects of vehicle damping ratio, vehicle speed, environmental noise, pavement roughness, and ongoing traffic. The contact response is computed based on the dynamic vertical equilibrium of the single‐DOF test vehicle. The chapter evaluates the reliability of the analytical solutions obtained using the damped vehicle model in terms of both the vehicle and contact responses. Vehicle speed plays an important role in sampling, efficiency, and excitation of the bridge in the field test.
