This chapter addresses testing with respect to antenna design, verification, covering acceptance, performance and environmental aspects to meet launch survival and in‐orbit performance requirements. It presents the development of a dualpolarized aperture‐coupled patch antenna with integrated feed network used in the SMOS. The chapter has three main sections covering antenna testing as a development and verification tool. The first section includes definitions for the antenna model philosophy and the type of testing to be performed, either as a design verification or to verify the integrity of the electrical, mechanical and thermal models. The next section presents the different types of test facilities that would normally be used in the development of a space‐qualified antenna. Finally, it illustrates the topics raised in the preceding sections, the complete design, development and verification sequence used for the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) antenna elements.
