This chapter deals with the impact of industrial cyber‐physical systems (ICPS) on transportation systems, such as rail and road, and the way the performance of these transportation systems can be improved using ICPS. Regardless of the transportation mode, the sector is characterized by push–pull forces and complexity factors, which drive the evolution of constructors' products and condition their competitiveness, as well as those of the fleet operators. Using ICPS and multi‐agent systems approaches, the chapter provides as an illustrative example, a reactive cyber‐physical maintenance and operational decision support system, named SUPERFLO. SUPERFLO considers the integration of trains and infrastructures as an ICPS. The physical space of SUPERFLO hosts the real‐world physical elements and the digital elements that control them. The cyber space of SUPERFLO hosts the learning and reconfiguration algorithms.
