Management and control of thrust in turbojet and turbofan applications is described using Engine Pressure Ratio (EPR) as the controlled parameter. Corrected fan speed as an alternative method of measuring and controlling thrust in turbofan applications is also discussed.

    The effect of inlet temperature on the available thrust and the concept of flat rating are presented. Definitions of “Maximum Take‐off Thrust”, “Maximum Continuous Thrust” and “Cruise Thrust” are described.

    Thrust augmentation via both water injection and afterburning are described with examples of their implementation.

    The need for coordinated control of afterburner fuel flow and exhaust nozzle area and the potential effects of the afterburner on the gas generator core and its compressor surge margin are discussed.
