The microgravity environment of orbital spaceflight creates new opportunities for the manufacture of medicines. Understanding, restoring, and maintaining the health of astronauts in the extreme environment of space through the development of new diagnostic tools, manufacturing processes, medicines formulation, and medicines management have immediate and long‐term benefit for medical care on Earth.

Space medicines and countermeasures are key components to astropharmacy; the field of research investigating medicines for space (covering issues such as stability and shelf life, and changes in PK/PD), medicines in space (including methods of drug synthesis and medicines formulation), and medicines from space (accelerated testing and crystallography, for example).

An ability to provide pharmaceutical care to astronauts will have profound benefits for the support of people in extreme and remote environments on Earth, and coupled with advances in our understanding of pharmacology, physiology, aging, and diagnostics from experiments in low Earth orbit (LEO), will underpin truly personalized medicines.
