The objective of driveline control is to control velocities and torques in engines. The solutions to the problems of vehicle surge, and free driveline oscillations when gear shifting, are respectively anti‐surge control and torque control for automated manual transmission (AMT) gear shifting. This chapter begins by describing the characteristics of driveline control and the basics of driveline control. It shows the design of anti‐surge control based on speed control with active damping. Control of driveline torques can be done by adopting a general approach with explicit modeling of the torque to be controlled. Torsion control is another approach based on the physical insight that if the main torsion of the driveline, is controlled, then the true torque of interest will be close to its desired value. Transmission torque control is also discussed in the chapter.
