The two trends of special interest in the context of engine and control system development are: new mechanical designs that make the engine hardware more flexible and new developments for engine state estimation. This chapter illustrates these trends by examples that go beyond the basics of engine control; the treatment is therefore more brief but with pointers to support material. The first example is variable valve actuation (VVA) that gives flexibility to the engine. The second example, variable compression, also exemplifies an advanced engine where a classical engine design trade‐off has been removed. The third example is ion‐sense, which is an in‐cylinder measurement that gives a signal that is rich in information but is complicated to interpret. It exemplifies the development of new sensors and advanced signal processing and interpretation techniques, which gives an opportunity for improved performance through feedback control.
