In recent years, the space sector has undergone a profound transformation marked by the increased intervention of commercial companies in a field that was previously reserved for States. This phenomenon, called New Space, began in the United States in the early 2000s with the appearance of start‐ups whose objective was to develop new applications based on space technologies to meet new societal needs. cost. In this chapter, the States with space capabilities very early on sought to assert their leadership in this increasingly lucrative sector by creating regulatory conditions favorable to the intervention of private companies in this sector and by transferring to them the responsibility for the development and operation of remote sensing systems. This transfer of responsibility has been accompanied by a transfer of technologies previously reserved for military observation satellites, which has led to continuous improvement in the performance of commercial satellites.
