At present, induction motor drives are the most mature technology among various commutatorless motor drives. There are two types of induction machines (IMs): the wound‐rotor and squirrel‐cage. This chapter discusses various induction motor drives, including their system configurations, IMs, power inverters, and control strategies. There are three main types of control strategies for induction motor drives: the variable‐voltage variable‐frequency (VVVF) control, field‐oriented control (FOC), and direct torque control (DTC). The induction motors for electric propulsion is principally similar to that for industrial application. When the electric vehicles (EV) adopt the single‐motor configuration, the induction motor is generally designed for high‐speed operation while using a planetary gear to step down the motor speed so as to match with the wheel speed. The Ford Siemens EV motor was one of the most well‐developed induction motors for EVs.
