Bird strike testing is now a vital step in the certification of any new aircraft or engine. Both American and European authorities have issued certification requirements (Federal Aviation Requirement, FAR, and CS) and made amendments to match any changes in bird ecology and the aviation industry. Either real or artificial birds are employed in bird impact test facilities, but using real birds is not recommended. Airframe testing is discussed here first and then two modules (wing and tail fin) are thoroughly described. Two case studies, the Alenia C‐27J Spartan transport aircraft and the recent Russian MS‐21 airliner, are discussed.

Next, testing of military aircraft is discussed. Tests for the canopy and windscreen of the US F35B STOVL military aircraft as well as its lift fan inlet door in STOVL mode are discussed.

Both FAR and CS‐800 certification regarding bird strikes with engines are listed. Details of engine test cells of engine manufacturers are given. Bird strike testing of the turbofan engine powering the Airbus A320 aircraft is described, where the engine is dismantled after testing, and the damage of successive modules is identified.

Finally, bird strike tests for helicopters are described. A test case performed at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is described for a bird having 2.2 lb weight impacting an inclined surface representing the windscreen at 140 and 180 knots.
