This chapter provides a thorough description of objective image quality metrics from a theoretical as well as practical point of view. The goal of the chapter is to describe objective metrics whose results can be correlated to subjective experiments. The presented metrics can in many cases also be used for characterization of the capturing device. The results of such measurements can be very helpful during the design phase. In a concluding section, metrics for video‐specific quality assessment are described.
