In the past 60 years, international tourism has grown from 25 million to nearly one billion arrivals per year, a one trillion US dollar industry. Although most tourists travel among developed countries in Europe and the Americas, recent growth in international travel has been strongest in developing countries. Trends of most interest to travel medicine include an ageing population interested in exotic travel, immigrants visiting friends and relatives, and students studying abroad.
