Fuel cell auxiliary power units (APUs) are a candidate technology to power auxiliary loads on heavy duty trucks and in other mobile applications. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has established technical targets for 1–10 kW fuel cell APUs operating on ultra‐low sulfur diesel fuel. The target parameters represent major barriers that must be overcome to make fuel cell APUs competitive with combustion‐based APUs and to provide a value proposition for the use of APUs instead of engine idling. The DOE 2020 fuel cell APU targets and associated status values are presented and discussed in this chapter.
