Infrared Scanner (IRS) is one of the key payloads aboard Chinese small satellite constellation for environment and disaster monitoring and forecasting (HJ‐1). The IRS has four multispectral bands including NIR, SWIR, MWIR and LWIR with a ground swath of 720 km and spatial resolution of 150 m/300 m. The main objective of the mission is the monitoring, prediction and evaluation of natural disaster and environment pollution. Special design and fabrication have been made to improve the performance of the IRS. The characteristics of the IRS are introduced in this chapter. Several applications examples are presented.
