The aim of the drainage system is to rapidly discharge the surface water and ground water, which is likely to endanger subgrade stability, to a place outside the subgrade using proper drainage facilities, and also to reduce the moisture content within the subgrade, so as to ensure subgrade strength, slope stability and driving safety. The drainage design of motorway subgrades and road surfaces should feature integrated planning and a rational layout. The drainage system design of the Nanjing‐Hangzhou Motorway not only takes the drainage needs of the motorway into consideration but also strives to achieve coordination between drainage system design and the overall landscape of the motorway in order to achieve consistency and harmony between project construction and environmental protection. With specific regard to the drainage system, it should not only meet the general motorway drainage requirements but also integrate into the overall landscape system of the motorway.
