This chapter discusses various vernier permanent magnet (VPM) motor drives, including their system configurations, machine topologies, power inverters, and control strategies for EV propulsion. It gives an overview of the corresponding design criteria, design examples, and potential applications. Essentially, the VPM machine is a kind of synchronous machine so that the configuration of the VPM motor drive is similar to that of the PM brushless motor drive, which consists of an electric motor, an electronic controller, a power inverter, and an optional transmission gear. In order to improve the power density, the vernier reluctance machine usually incorporates PMs to provide the field excitation, thus becoming the VPM machine. Since the VPM machine is essentially a PM synchronous machine, the control strategy of the VPM motor drive is virtually the same as that of the traditional PM synchronous motor drive.
