Dedicated fuel cell backup power systems are at the early commercial stage with several vendors supplying low temperature PEM units in the 200 W to 50 kW range, with the most prevalent being 5 kW. Various applications exist, the most common and fastest growing being the use for cellular telecommunications sites. Fuel cells have several advantages over incumbent technologies such as batteries and diesel generators, including durability and reliability, scalability, cost, environmental benefits, fuel flexibility, and dimensions. The two most common fuel choices for backup power systems are compressed gaseous hydrogen, generally stored in cylinders, and methanol, often provided as a methanol/water mixture. Economic analysis indicates fuel cell backup power total costs of ownership are comparable to incumbent technologies for 8‐h runtimes due to reduced maintenance requirements, with positive payback available over longer backup durations, and anticipated volume reductions are expected to bring installed costs down significantly over time.
