A landing/takeoff slot is a right granted by an airport authority to airlines interested in serving the airport. The right allows the slot holder to schedule a flight landing or a departure during a specific time period. This chapter highlights the main relevant aspects of slot allocation to airline network planning. Given the legal and commercial nature of the slot allocation practice, it follows in most cases the text given in the International Air Transport Association's Worldwide Slot Guidelines (IATA's WSG) report. The slot allocation practice varies based on the congestion level at the airport to be served by the airlines. In that regard, airports are categorized based on their congestion level. Airports are categorized by the responsible authorities according to the levels of congestion. The chapter further explores these levels in more detail.
