This chapter describes fundamental cryptographic mechanisms. The goal is to provide a basis for assessing the suitability of specific cryptographic mechanisms for vehicle communications. After outlining the main categories of cryptographic mechanisms, the chapter describes the digital signature algorithms that form the foundation for most other security functions. It presents their main principles, methodologies, and properties that are essential for assessing their suitability for consumer vehicle networks. The chapter then discusses the techniques for message authentication and integrity verification. It further describes methods for communicating parties to establish shared secret keys by exchanging plaintext messages over nonprivate and nonsecured networks. Finally, the chapter describes the public key encryption algorithm used in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1609.2 standard.
