Autonomous vehicles (AVs) present a transformative opportunity in the transportation sector by promising safer, more efficient, and more inclusive travel for diverse populations. However, a pivotal challenge lies in discerning what information should be relayed to the driver to ensure efficient vehicle control. This study explores the potential of augmented reality (AR) in delivering pertinent information based on distinct accessibility guidelines, ensuring a symbiotic relationship between vehicle automation and human oversight. To this end, we evaluated a human–machine interface (HMI) that integrated information collection, data processing, judgment, and task execution among 50 participants. Metrics such as situation awareness, comfort levels, and participant feedback were employed to scrutinize the design principles. Preliminary findings indicate that while a non‐transparent HMI design impedes environmental comprehension, components such as “knowledge acquisition” and “action execution” are critical. Most participants also expressed a preference for heightened accessibility features within the HMI. The proposed AR‐centric HMI offers a promising avenue to bolster accessibility in AVs, potentially enhancing the user experience, especially for those with disabilities or mobility challenges.
