Operations research focuses on optimizing real‐world tasks and is directly relatable to logistics, as the constituent components of capabilities support system can be modeled, analyzed, and optimized with readily accessible, modern software. This chapter addresses logistics support modeling, discusses specific system adaptations due to the introduction of unmanned systems, and poses areas for consideration when modeling new support system. Optimization is an important activity when analyzing both existing and developing logistics support systems, but it is even more so in the development of logistics support systems that support new capabilities. The unmanned systems support community faces two sets of challenges, linked to chronologic proximity: immediate and future. One of the advantages of modeling logistics system over some other types of military systems is that almost all components of a logistic system can be stochastically modeled for quantitative outcomes when bounded by a robust set of approximations and appropriate distributions.
