Takeoff and landing performance data are critical information for a pilot who is determining whether a given runway is sufficiently long for safe operations. This chapter describes a theoretical approach for estimating the takeoff and landing distance, based on the aircraft equations of motion that can be solved numerically. Simple approximations for takeoff and landing distance are also provided, along with empirical fits to historical aircraft data. Measurement methods, flight testing procedures, and data analysis approaches are discussed, with a concluding example of takeoff performance for a Cessna R182.
