This chapter provides a detailed presentation of architectures and variants of Power‐by‐Wire (PbW) actuators of Electro‐hydrostatic Actuators (EHA) type, meaning actuators in which pressurized fluid is the intermediary power vector between the electric field (the power source of the actuator) and the mechanical field (the actuator‐driven load). It comprises three parts: historical background and maturing, solutions implemented in service and specificities of EHAs. The objective of the Electrically Powered Actuation Device (EPAD) program was to demonstrate the credibility of PbW actuation for critical functions. It resulted in the development and flying of an aileron EHA‐FP (Fixed displacement) on an F‐18. While the landing gear actuation (doors, locks, legs extension/retraction and steering) is also a large power consumer, there are notable differences related to flight controls. The EHA can be perceived as a transitory solution towards the hydraulic‐less aircraft.
