The bipolar plate (BP) is one of the critical multifunctional components in a polymer exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. Composite bipolar plates are light in weight, have good chemical resistance, as well as low cost. Metallic bipolar plate candidates have excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, good mechanical strength, high chemical stability, very wide alloy choices, and low cost. Both composite and metallic bipolar plates have existing pathways for high‐volume, high‐speed mass production. This chapter evaluates both non‐metallic and metallic materials for bipolar plates. The combination of the advantages of both classes would be the perspective of the trends for the bipolar plate development.
