Design drivers arise in the environment of the system as perceived by different organisational levels. This chapter provides an insight into the many conflicting requirements, desires, aspirations, and realities that are the daily life of the systems engineer. It describes example drivers to illustrate typical considerations that need to be applied by the systems engineer. The business environment contains drivers that concern the ability of the business to satisfy its shareholders as well as its customers, employees, and the local community. These are drivers closely aligned to the early definition phases in assessing the requirements to be met, the standards to be applied, and the resources required to complete the project within cost, time, and performance limitations. The design drivers are closely aligned to the design of the product and its sub‐systems and components.
