This chapter focuses on the various global standardization activities related to the automotive industry, where vehicles are communicating directly with other vehicles and with roadside infrastructure. It begins with a discussion of the basic requirement for interoperability within a major region. Next, the chapter provides some insight into why standardization is absolutely necessary, but is not sufficient, to ensure interoperability. It also provides an overview of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) seven‐layer protocol model. The chapter discusses the characterization of relevant standards development activities according to the related layers of this OSI model. It introduces and describes standards development progress in the three regions with strong activity: North America, Europe and Japan. Differences in the various standardization processes are described, along with relationships and interactions among standards development organizations, with the overall goal of providing the reader with both a regional and a global perspective on relevant standardization processes.
