As well as modifying aircraft systems, airports, and aircraft operating procedures, another opportunity to bring about ‘more sustainable’ air transportation is to reduce dependence on fuel derived from petroleum, i.e. from crude oil or oil shale/sand. Since the 1950s, nearly all currently certified passenger and cargo‐carrying aircraft fitted with gas turbine power plants have used aviation turbine fuel (ATF) produced by petroleum refineries. This chapter focuses on the certification requirements of so‐called ‘drop‐in’ ATF within the civil sector. ‘Non‐drop‐in’ alternative ATF options are also briefly discussed. The Fischer‐Tropsch process was first conceived in Germany around 1944 as a means to convert coal into liquid hydrocarbons, but in principle it can be used to convert any carbon feedstock, including natural gas and plant cellulose.
