The power plant is a prominent system contributing to the technical and economic success of the aircraft under development. Engines are selected and their power or thrust is provisionally matched to the airframe in an early design stage. This chapter presents an elementary approach to describe gas turbine engine characteristics which are essential to flight performance. The variation with altitude and speed of the available power or thrust and fuel consumption is translated into dimensionless parameters. Specifying the thrust lapse and overall efficiency in terms of generalized performances enables a unified approach to aircraft performance optimization and systematic comparison of engines dependent on their technologies. Recent technological developments of turbofan engines are discussed and illustrated by a spectrum of overall efficiency and installation effects as influenced by specific thrust or bypass ratio. The chapter concludes with an overview of preferred locations for installing the power plant and environmental issues associated with engine selection.
