The fleet assignment problem is an important component of the flight schedule planning process. It is typically solved after determining a preliminary flight schedule. This chapter illustrates the fleet assignment problem for a hypothetical airline that operates a few fleet types. It then presents the fleet assignment solution using the time‐staggered (time‐space) diagram. For larger airlines, the fleet assignment problem is formulated as an optimization problem. The objective of this optimization problem is to determine the optimal fleet assignment solution that maximizes the airline's net revenue. This objective is achieved by optimally matching the demand (number of passenger and cargo) and the supply (fleet seat and cargo capacity) while maximizing the profitability of the schedule. Finally, the chapter explores four main sets of constraints to the basic fleet assignment problem: the coverage constraints; the resources constraints; the through flights constraints; and the balance constraints.
