Human drivers are vulnerable; they sometimes make errors, get distracted and even become drowsy during driving. Based on today's sophisticated environmental sensing and vehicle control technologies, many advanced driver‐assistance systems (ADASs) have been studied and developed, and some of them have already been commercialized. This chapter talks about management of risks of automobile accidents via human‐machine collaboration. It presents a theoretical model of trust in ADAS, which is useful to understand what overtrust and/or distrust is and what should be needed to avoid inappropriate trust. It also presents several driver‐monitoring techniques, especially to detect driver drowsiness or fatigue and driver lane change intent. Ways of human–machine collaboration via mutual understanding are then discussed. Finally, the chapter shows several examples of design of attention arousal systems, warning systems and systems that perform safety control actions in an autonomous manner.
