Additive manufacturing (AM), in its basic form, involves the generation of physical objects from graphical computer data without the use of traditional tools. This chapter provides a general discussion on the basic concepts of AM, namely, computer‐aided design (CAD), part building, and post‐processing. The first stage of AM involves either using an advanced 3D CAD system to develop a computer model of the part to be produced or using reverse engineering to develop a computer model from a part. Due to the significant changes in processing methodology associated with different materials, the discussion on part building will be based on the type of material to be processed. In this regard, the chapter considers three main types of systems: liquid‐based systems, powder‐based systems, and solid‐based systems.
