Details about planning a flight test program and individual flights are provided in this chapter. The process of planning and documenting a test plan is provided in detail, including development of test cards. Principles of risk management applied to flight testing are overviewed, with a discussion of common processes used to identify hazards and related risks. A community‐based approach is advocated, where wisdom from other, more experienced flight test professionals can be gleaned from. The second part of this chapter provides an overview of the common steps taken by a pilot to prepare for an individual flight. These steps include identification of the flight area relative to controlled airspace, planning for weather, calculation of weight and balance, and performing a pre‐flight inspection of the airplane.
