The primary function of engine control is to adjust the engine torque generated to meet the required torque from the driver and at same time to satisfy the requirements of emission, fuel economy, driving comfort, and safety. This chapter briefly describes the general schematic diagrams of spark ignition (SI) engine and diesel engine control. It introduces three strategies such as bang‐bang control strategy of overvoltage protection, PID‐based on/off control strategy of overvoltage protection, and fuzzy logic—based on/off control strategy of overvoltage protection to control the overvoltage protection unit (OVPU). The chapter also briefly addresses two key control problems such as traction torque control, and anti‐rollback control, and introduces the controls of the rotary motor‐based active suspension system. It presents PID and model predictive control strategies of the active suspension system based on the parameters of the suspension system and vehicle body.
