In the context of modernizing the grid, the population of electric vehicles (EVs) is growing at a rapid pace. Such a growth will increase the waiting time at charging stations (CSs). To overcome this challenge, we have proposed a new distributed navigation framework in this paper. The proposed approach enables EVs to compute the expected route according to the EV owner's objective with consideration of waiting time and various real‐time parameters. To solve this, we have applied a reinforcement learning algorithm along with real‐time learning of waiting times to predict the accurate delay due to EV charging. The efficiency of the proposed framework is demonstrated through simulation with consideration of the real road network of Delhi, real time traffic conditions on the road with CSs, and speed limit of the road. Also, the proposed distributed framework is compared with the conventional approach (minimum distance route) and the minimum journey time approach. Additionally, we have demonstrated the potential of the proposed learning algorithm to predict the waiting time at CS. In some cases, the distributed framework reduces the journey time up to 35% and, in other case, it reduces the time and cost of a journey up to 25% and 27% compared to conventional approaches.
