In recent years, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and telematics systems have transformed the transportation business by delivering new solutions to problems within the industry such as traffic congestion, safety concerns, and environmental issues. These technologies have made it possible for cars and the infrastructure that supports transportation to communicate with one another in real time. This has made it easier for drivers, vehicles, and the systems that control traffic to share information with one another.

Intelligent transportation systems include a wide variety of technologies, such as sophisticated traffic management systems, smart parking, linked and autonomous cars, and intelligent transportation infrastructure. These technologies are grouped together under the umbrella term “intelligent transportation infrastructure.” These systems gather and analyze data on traffic patterns, road conditions, and vehicle performance by making use of a variety of data sources. Some examples of these data sources are global positioning systems (GPS), sensors, and cameras. Telematics systems, on the other hand, are primarily concerned with the gathering and transmission of data from individual cars. This data may include information on the location of the vehicle, its speed, its fuel consumption, and a variety of other important parameters. This data is used to improve driver safety, enhance vehicle performance, and offer fleet management with useful insights. In this chapter, we not only go over the principles in great depth but also analyze their applications and use cases.
