The fundamentals related to shipboard arc flash analysis with fault current analyses are presented with software‐driven modeling for arc flash analysis. An arc blast can release a potential pressure wave. This wave can cause physical injuries, collapse the lungs, or create noise that can damage hearing. Equations developed by electrical safety standards (IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E) to calculate the potential incident energy caused by an arcing fault indicates that the faster the arcing fault is cleared, the lower the incident energy. Abnormal conditions on energized electrical equipment will increase the potential risk of exposure to workers to the electrical hazards of arc flash with associated blast and shock. Arc‐flash protection is always based on the incident energy level on the person's face and body at the working distance, not the incident energy on the hands or arms.
