This chapter presents a mathematical model for optimized intermodal roundtrips for passenger or freight transport and some computational experiments to highlight the efficacy of the model and compare intermodal alternatives. The model is formulated as a linear mixed binary program. The objective function consists of minimizing the travel cost associated with a roundtrip. Several assumptions and constraints are attained such as a roundtrip is composed of an outward and a return trip; the first node is the last node of the roundtrip; and the node may be fixed or optional visited, according to the definition of the user. The model can be used for freight or passenger transport. The model application shows the importance of planning optimal roundtrips instead of two optimal one‐way journeys when fixed nodes should be visited and the consequences of having restrictions when planning a trip.
