Public transit networks around the world, including bus, tram, and train systems and their stops and stations, have been targets for terrorist attacks. These systems are vulnerable to attack because they must remain openly accessible and disseminate information about their services widely in order to serve society and because complex screening of passengers would severely hamper their efficient operation. This chapter describes and categorizes security risks and prevention in public transport systems, concentrating on systems that include stations and exclusive rights‐of‐way, though many of the concepts addressed are applicable to systems that operate on public streets in mixed traffic. Because terrorism and more common criminal activity are often, though not always, addressed by similar prevention strategies, we consider the relationships between the two. We discuss crime and attack prevention through physical design and planning of facilities, as well as the growing utility of video and other surveillance systems as technological capacities in these areas improve. We also consider training of transit system staff and encouragement of patron participation in security screening through information campaigns. The importance of multiagency cooperation and reliance upon police and security agencies in addition to transit personnel is also addressed as a critical element in assuring security in public transit systems.
