In this chapter, the basics of anisotropic materials and fiber composites, as required in the context of this work, are presented. Based on the structure of fiber composites and the characteristic properties of fibers and matrix, special features of the mechanical properties of a unidirectional single layer are described and the calculation equations for determining the engineering constants are given. The deformation behavior of laminates is also briefly explained. The transformation laws are based on tensor and on vector notations of Voigt and Kelvin.
