American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) type approval directive is for ABS approved products for marine application. This program is a process of evaluation, audit and maintenance of ABS approved product database. Shipboard electrical power‐system design fundamentals for traditional low‐voltage power generation and distribution are well established and supported by rules and regulations. The harmonization of international requirements has also created a complex mix‐and‐ match situation, where the design and development process must be supported by verification of the design, verification of equipment selection, and verification of proper installation and shipboard operational testing. The adjustable speed drive uses the fundamental shipboard power system with a 60 Hz, three‐phase ungrounded source. The fault current analysis is performed to establish the mechanical strength and electrical properties of circuit breakers, switches, bus bars, and other equipment likely to experience the energy released by an electrical fault.
