Satellite navigation has become the mainstay of all global navigation systems and is an indispensable tool in modern aviation. This chapter describes the infrastructure, signals, and cockpit equipment required for navigation by satellite. A GNSS system employs a constellation of satellites orbiting the Earth so that a vehicle always has line of sight with several of them. The group of satellites or space vehicles (SVs) that are at the heart of a satellite navigation system are described as a constellation and they transmit in the UHF band. The format of the transmissions sent by SVs that enable position fixing by the user segment is explained in detail for the global positioning system (GPS) satellites. The GNSS system can store a flight plan in the form of a sequence of waypoints whose positions are stored on a database and will then display the tracks for the pilot to follow the flight plan.
